Evelin Kasikov's embroidery work has been featured on CRAFT before because her projects were so incredible, and her new work, called The Portrait Project, is no exception.

The Portrait Project is a set of 10 stitched portraits, all based on the same grid. Images are created by using different stitching methods and thread thicknesses. The grid consists of squares, crosses and diagonal lines. Each image is created by using some or all of the layers.

Bigger on the inside

Tangy

When I was a teenager, I insisted my mother knit me a Doctor Who scarf. Although the colors weren’t precisely right, it was exactly what I wanted: an absurdly long, multicolored scarf with a generous fringe. I wore it for years. And years. I was still wearing it when I finished university and started my first proper job.

One cold winter day, a coworker made a comment in passing. I am certain he meant it to be helpful advice, but it stung more than he could know. He said that the scarf was childish, and if I wanted to be taken seriously in my career I needed to dress the part. The scarf got put away, and I spent more than 10 years dressing conservatively for a career that I never quite fit into.

Fast forward to 2005, when Doctor Who was relaunched to much acclaim, and I was busy reinventing myself and finding a career I could fit comfortably into. I never forgot my beloved Doctor Who scarf – I’d kept it all along – and I harbored a fantasy of reinventing it for my new life.

And so: Bigger on the inside. A sophisticated, grown-up take on the Doctor Who scarf. No matter how conservative your office, you won’t be out of place with this draped tastefully around your shoulders.

Locked in an epic battle with your fabric stash? Check out this brilliant tutorial for filing your fabric from Karen at Sew Many Ways. Storing fabric in a filing cabinet means avoiding wrinkles, seeing your whole stash at a glance, and protecting cloth from fading and dust. I'm a total organization junky, but this sure blows my multi-box method out of the water!

How do you organize your fabric?

Polymer clay skull ring

Polymer clay skull ring

My daughters and I have been playing around with polymer clay lately. It's wonderful stuff. You can mold it like regular oil based clay, but when you bake it in the oven it gets hard. I've been looking around online for inspiration, and I came across this great skull ring that Rossana Meyer made with polymer clay.

201204261604This handmade skull ring was crafted out Fimo Soft Polymer Clay. I made this for a boy with a hardcore attitude! I used pastel yellow for the base, carved out all the details and baked for 10 minutes at 230F. When it was cool enough, I was able to push black clay in all the carved details , and added two little balls of red clay for the eyes.

The Making of the Epic CAT-AT - An AT-AT Walker Cat Condo

Reddit user BillyAppletini posted about this amazing CAT-AT (and AT-AT Walker cat house) that he made for a friend. His comment thread has a lot of fun information about the building process, and his image gallery contains pictures of the project in-progress. I - I mean my cat - desperately needs one of these ...

I wouldn't consider myself a great woodworker or an artist - but I will take credit for being committed to a joke. I wrecked my house for a month building this, which was about 27 days longer than I wish it would have taken. The trickiest part was keeping any of my friends from coming inside my place for that whole time - I knew they wouldn't be able to keep it a secret!

The inside of the CAT-AT has a fully furnished luxury cat condo.

I was originally going to forge an Amazon receipt and make it look like my buddy's cat ordered it on his Amazon account and have it delivered while he was at work, but enough was enough - when it was complete, I had to get it out of my loft and clean up.

I love the interior details like "trophy" bird heads mounted on the wall, a lighted bar with tiny liquor bottles, and a wee disco ball. This is amazing.
